چکیده

The purpose of this project has been to analyse the requirements of the discrete multitone (DMT) transceiver part of an asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) modem, and to suggest a design of a processor capable of providing the functionalities required by such a modem. The ADSL system was analysed and critical parts were pinpointed. These parts include Fourier transforms (DFT) and signal detection (Viterbi algorithm). A survey of different suggestions for the two algorithms were carried out based on the open litterature, and a few were selected for closer examination. Of the examined algorithms, some improvements were found by the project group, and included in the design. Based on the results of the analysis and algorithm improvement, an architecture for the processor was designed. This architecture includes a datapath with a number of functional units (including both pipelined and parallel units) and a 4-stage pipelined control-path. An instruction set supporting the architecture was likewise designed. The obtained results include the ADSL analysis , the algorithm analysis and the processor design.
